REEM ALJEALLY B. 1997
Reem Aljeally (b. 1997) is a contemporary Sudanese visual artist, architect, designer, and curator based in Cairo, Egypt. She graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Khartoum in 2018.
Using mostly acrylic on canvas, Reem’s work explores the personality and life of a young woman in Sudan. She draws her inspiration from personal reflection, observations, and curiosity. In her painting, the characters reveal mixed emotions of familiarity, vulnerability, defeat, or acceptance of reality which is uncertain. By incorporating plants and cats in her compositions she reveals high self-esteem, comfort, optimism, and compassion.
Also, Reem has a great passion for channeling her talents towards enriching the art scene in addition to empowering her fellow artists in Sudan. This led her to establish The Muse Multi Studios in 2019, an arts organization that aims to train, support and promote visual arts. Her curatorial artistic approach has been focused on paintings that speak of women in her country, and through them, she advocates for their rights and highlights the issues she -herself- sees and sometimes tends to face.
“Through painting, I try to materialize this concept using figures and characters to project stories and sometimes portray my own emotions and life situations. My work is dominated by a feminine presence that emerges from my constant observations of the female character and its positioning in the society. Most of my work is also marked with amplified and largely positioned eyes as I believe they speak of emotions that were not put into words and they act as a book into a person’s insides.”
